As a member of the UN SDG Global Partner Network, National Taiwan University works with six universities internationally and holds annual UN SDG Research Project Competition along the member universities. In 2023, the competition calls for submissions relevant to UN SDG 16. The first place of the NTU competition will receive a NTD$20,000 scholarship and the second place will receive a NTD$10,000 scholarship. The first place will also represent National Taiwan University to attend the Global Partners Research Forum, presenting the research project to winners of each member universities.
What is UN SDGs?
In 2015, all United Nations Member States adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The agenda includes 17 Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDGs), calling for urgent actions by nation-states to cultivate a sustainable future. The Sustainable Developmental Goals recognize the interconnectedness among ending poverty and inequality, improvement of health, education, and economic growth, and tackling climate change. Thus, the 17 Sustainable Developmental Goals build on the collaborative works of various nation-states and United Nations and include interdisciplinary targets that aim to bring about the well-being of people and planet.
About the Competition
The UN SDG Global Partner Network was established in 2021 with originally five universities around the globe holding research project competitions to encourage students’ engagement with SDGs. The original member universities are Indiana University (U.S.A.), Moi University (Kenya), New Castle University (England), National Autonomous University of Mexico (Mexico), and University of Hamburg (Germany). Each year, the Global Partner Network select a UN SDG to be the topic of the annual research project competition. The first-placed applicants of each institution then come together to share and discuss their research projects at the Global Partners Research Forum, empowering students globally to exchange ideas and take actions in creating a sustainable future.
Last year, National Taiwan University and O.P. Jindal Global University (India) joined the Global Partner Network and began partaking in the competition as well as the Global Partners Research Forum. 2022 winning research projects of each university can be found here.
The 2023 UN SDG Research Project Competition focuses on SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. The goal encompasses targets such as anti-violence, inclusivity, effective and transparent institutions, and more.
Competition Timeline
The information session for the 2023 UN SDG Research Project Competition will take place on 9/20/2022 (Tue.). The submission deadline is on 12/11/2022 (Sun.) before the end of the Fall Semester 2022 semester. The announcement of the competition winners will be in February 2023 at the start of Spring Semester 2023. Finally, the online Global Partners Research Forum will be held on 4/28/2023 (Fri).
Information Session
NTU Office of International Affairs will hold an information session introducing the competition guidelines on 9/20/2022 (Tue.). Moreover, 2 NTU professors in relevant fields to UN SDG 16 are invited to share their own research and potential topics, providing guidance for those interested in attending the competition.

Competition Guidelines
Eligibility
NTU undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in 2022 academic year are all eligible for submission.
Mentor
Students can identify a faculty member or researcher as mentor, but mentorship is not a criterion for participation.
Submission
- Mode:
- Submissions should be individual research projects.
- Submissions should include a research project media, a research project presentation video, and Copyright Authorization Agreement.
- Undergraduate and graduate submissions will be evaluated respectively.
- Topic:
- The research thesis should have clear connections with UN SDG 16.
- Research Project Media:
- All forms of media, including poster, slide show, video, and more can enter for submission.
- The research project media should be written or spoken in English and academic language.
- The research project media should include name of student, mentors (if any), abstract, identified impact target, methods, findings or conclusions, and references.
- The research project media should clearly discuss how the research project impacts local and international communities.
- Regarding research project submission file limitation, please contact Yu-chiao Chang of OIA.
- Research Project Presentation:
- Please record a 3-5 minute English research project presentation video.
- Research project presentation video should be conducted with visual references (i.e. poster, slide show, etc.).
