Joint Seed Funding

At National Taiwan University (NTU), the Office of International Affairs (OIA) launched a range of seed funding opportunities designed to ignite innovation through global partnership. The aim of the seed funding initiative is to support the initiation of long-term interdisciplinary collaborative projects between strategic partner universities. The idea is to “plant a seed” that can eventually attract external funding.

 

Eligibility 

NTU full-time or project-based faculty members/research fellow.

Application Period

Mid-August to November. Please refer to individual funding application information.

Funding Period

January 1 to December 31, 2026.

Eligible Funding Items

International travel expenses by NTU faculty and students, relevant international collaboration expenses, and stipend for foreign, non-NTU scholars.

Please note:

  • Eligible expenses considered to be international collaboration include (1) NTU faculty, researchers, and graduate students research abroad, (2) hosting international conferences, workshops, or symposiums in Taiwan, and (3) joint lecture or lecture series.
  • Eligible expenses considered to be daily stipend for hosting foreign, non-NTU scholars include (1) remuneration and living expenses for scholars’ work days in Taiwan and (2) domestic travel in Taiwan.
  • Funding does NOT cover: consumable supplies and equipment for research and personnel expenditure, including full-time or part-time assistants.

Important Information

  • All project proposals must be jointly submitted by NTU and Partner PIs.
  • Co-advising is encouraged and additional funding may be allocated depending on the overall budget availability.
  • For NTU OIA funding, NTU PI is eligible to submit a maximum of 2 proposals with different partner university per year and receive funding with the same partner university at most twice.
  • PIs should actively engaged in events with our strategic partners.

Partner Institution Application Information

University of Bordeaux

Eligibility:

  • UBx PI must be current full-time faculty, researcher or post-doc from the University of Bordeaux or one of its associated local partners.
  • NTU PI must be full-time or project-based faculty members/research fellow.

Funding Amount: Up to EUR 15,000 (NTD 520,000) per selected proposal. In other words, each university will offer up to EUR 7,500 (NTD 260,000) per selected proposal to their respective faculty.

Number of Porjects Funded: Up to 2 projects.

How to Apply:

  • Application Period: September 15 to November 14, 2025.

University of St Andrews

Eligibility:

  • St Andrews applicants should be full-time or part-time academic staff with a contract of employment until at least the end of the project
  • NTU PI must be full-time or project-based faculty members/research fellow.

Funding Amount: Up to £12,000 (GBP)/$480,000 (NTD) per selected proposal. In other words, each university will offer up to GBP £6,000 (NTD 240,000) per selected proposal to their respective faculty.

Number of Porjects Funded: Up to 2 projects.

Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich

Eligibility:

  • LMU Chief Investigator (CI) must be full-time, tenure track faculty members for the duration of the funding period.
  • NTU PI must be full-time or project-based faculty members/research fellow.

Funding Amount: Up to EUR 12,000 (NTD 400,000) per selected proposal. In other words, each university will offer up to EUR 6,000 (NTD 200,000) per selected proposal to their respective faculty.

Number of Porjects Funded: Up to 3 projects.

How to Apply:

  • Application Period: now open until November 7, 2025.
  • Application Materials: Project Proposal Form, CVs of PIs and collaborator(s), and Letter of Support from lab/faculty director of PIs. For details, please refer to “Application” in the Call for Proposals.

Tohoku University

Eligibility:

  • TU PI should be tenured or tenure-track faculty.
  • NTU PI must be full-time or project-based faculty members/research fellow.

Funding Amount: Up to JPY 2,000,000 (NTD 400,000) per selected proposal. In other words, each university will offer up to JPY 1,000,000 (NTD 200,000) per selected proposal to their respective faculty.

Number of Porjects Funded: Up to 5 projects.

Funding Period: January 1 to December 31, 2026 at NTU and from April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027 at TU. 

How to Apply:

  • Application Period: September 25 to November 17, 2025, by 17:00 (Taiwan time)/18:00 (Japan time).

Funding Amount: Up to KRW 20,000,000 (NTD 440,000) per selected proposal. In other words, each university will offer up to KRW 10,000,000 (NTD 220,000) per selected proposal to their respective faculty.

Number of Porjects Funded: Up to 5 projects.

University of Sydney

Eligibility:

  • USyd PI must be employed on a full-time, part-time (appointed at least 0.5 FTE), fixed term or continuing basis. If on a fixed term contract, the end date must be beyond the funding period.

  • NTU PI must be full-time or project-based faculty members/research fellow.

Funding Amount: Up to AUD 20,000 (NTD 400,000) per selected proposal. In other words, each university will offer up to AUD 10,000 (NTD 200,000) per selected proposal to their respective faculty.

Number of Porjects Funded: Up to 5 projects.

How to Apply:

  • Application Period: September 22 to October 31(11:59pm AEDT / 8:59pm TST), 2025.

University of Illinois System- Travel Grant

Eligibility:

  • U of I PI must be full-time faculty members for the duration of the funding period.
  • NTU PI must be full-time or project-based faculty members/research fellow for the duration of the funding period.

Funding Amount: Each university will offer up to USD 5,000 (NTD 150,000) per selected proposal to their respective faculty.

Number of Porjects Funded: Up to 4 projects.

Funding Period: March 1 to December 31, 2026 at NTU and March 1, 2026 to February 28, 2027 at U of I.

Eligibility:

  • UT Austin PI must be full-time, tenure track faculty members for the duration of the funding period.
  • NTU PI must be full-time or project-based faculty members/research fellow for the duration of the funding period.

Funding Amount: Up to USD 20,000 (NTD 600,000) per selected proposal. In other words, each university will offer up to USD 10,000 (NTD 300,000) per selected proposal to their respective faculty.

Number of Porjects Funded: Up to 3 projects.

Funding Period: February 1 to December 31, 2026 at NTU and February 1, 2026 to March 1, 2027 at UT Austin.

University of Toronto

Eligibility:

  • U of T faculty members who meet the University’s definition of a Principal Investigator (PI) are eligible to apply. PIs must hold an appointment for the full duration of the grant’s funding period plus one year. Successful status only PIs must maintain their funding at an account within the University.
  • NTU PI must be full-time or project-based faculty members/research fellow.

Funding Amount: Up to CAD 20,000 (NTD 440,000) per selected proposals. In other words, each university will offer up to CAD 10,000 (NTD 220,000) per selected proposal to their respective faculty.

Number of Porjects Funded: Up to 5 projects.

How to Apply:

  • Application Period: August 5 to October 17, 2025.
