Chinese and English Proficiency Test

Undergraduate First Year international students:

All the undergraduate year 1 students need to take the Online English Proficiency Test, so that you may be arranged to the mandatory course “Freshmen English”  suitable to your English level . 

Only the student admitted to a fully-Chinese taught program needs to take this Online Chinese Proficiency test to arrange you to the mandatory course “College Chinese” suitable to your Chinese level. For students who fail the Chinese Proficiency Test, please attend the Online oral test for “General Chinese Language Course”, at 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Aug. 22nd (Thu.), 2024. (The link for online oral test will be sent to your personal NTU mailbox.). If you have any questions, please contact Ms. En-Fong Miao (TEL: 3366-3417 ext. 223).

Students admitted to a fully-English taught program need to take the General Chinese Course Registration & Placement Test on August 31 to arrange you to the mandatory course “General Chinese” suitble to your Chinese level.

August 2-14

Basic Subject Waivers Certification Exam (on site) Registration
If you would like to exempt Freshment English Course and Advanced English Course by taking this Basic Subject Waivers Certification Exam, you need to pass the Online English Proficiency Test on August 12, then you can register to take it. Students who pass the English Subject Waivers Certification Exam can waive Freshman English, obtain the required 6 English/Foreign Language credits, and waive the Online English Program.

If you would like to take the Chinese Basic Subject Waivers Certification Exam, you need to have one of the ceritficate mentioned in below to be eligible to register to take  the Chinese Basic Subject Waivers Certification Exam:

 (1)TOCFL listening and reading Effective Operational Proficiency  C1 level 5 or above;
(2)HSK level 6;
(3)中国語検定試験 Level 1 or above;
(4)TECC level A or above;
(5)STPM level B or above;
(6)UEC level B6 or above.
August 6 (TUE) after 16:00 Students can apply for “College Chinese: Primary Level” with TOCFL Level 3 listening, reading, writing tests certificate and transcript. To apply, please fill out the application form and submit it online with a scanned copy of your (1) passport and (2) test certificate or result slip to the link below before August 6th (Tue.), 2024:

Qualified students will not have to take the Online Chinese Proficiency Test on August 12, BUT they should bring the original copy of their certificate or result slip to the Department of Chinese Literature Office for verification before 5:00 p.m. on September 20th (Fri.), 2024Qualification for taking courses will otherwise be annulled.
August 7 (WED) noon The list of qualified students will be announced on  College Chinese website (https://cc.cl.ntu.edu.tw/proficiencyTest)  on August 7th (Wed.), 2024.  Qualified students will not have to take the Online Chinese Proficiency Test on August 12, BUT they should bring the original copy of their certificate or result slip to the Department of Chinese Literature Office for verification before 5:00 p.m. on September 20th (Fri.), 2024Qualification for taking courses will otherwise be annulled.
August 8 (THU)

Announcement of Test Schedule and information will be sent to students’ personal NTU mailbox (B13xxxxxx@ntu.edu.tw) on August 8th, 2024.  Your NTU mail account is your student ID number, where you can get it on the Pre-Arrival Survey after August 1, 2024

*Due to identity validation, the English Proficiency Test results will only be used for the placement of Freshman English Class and not for waiving Freshman English.
*Those who do not take the online test will not be allowed to take “College Chinese” or “Freshman English.”

Online oral test for “General Chinese Language Course”
Fully-Chinese taught program freshman students  who fail the Online Chinese Proficiency Test on August 12,  please attend the online oral test for “General Chinese Language Course”, at 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Aug. 22nd (Thu.), 2024.

Basic Subject (Chinese and English) Waivers Certification Exam

Students who meet one of the following requirements can apply for waiving Freshman English (and do not need to take the English Proficiency Test on August 12):
(1) have passed the General English Proficiency Test (GEPT) at the Higher-Intermediate level or above (both the preliminary test and the final test);
(2) have achieved a score of 83 or higher in the new Internet-based TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language);
(3) have achieved Level 6.5 or above in the IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing System);
(4) have achieved Grade B or above in the FCE (First Certificate in English) or FCE for Schools;
(5) have achieved a score of 865 points or higher on the TOEIC (Test Of English for International Communication) Reading and Listening test, together with a score of 170 or higher on the TOEIC Speaking Test and a score of 165 or higher on the TOEIC Writing Test;
(6) have achieved a score of 217 or above in the FLPT (Foreign Language Proficiency Test) English Reading and Listening Test, together with a Level S-2+ or above in the English Speaking Test and a level B or above in the English Writing Test;
(7) have achieved Level 8.5 or above in the TOEFL Essentials Test;
(8) have achieved Level 4 or above in the Advanced Placement (AP) English Language and Composition Exam or English Literature and Composition Exam;
(9) have primary and secondary graduate certificates or transcripts for at least five years. All documents should be from an English-speaking country as specified by NTU’s Office of International Affairs. (https://reurl.cc/553xV6)

August 26(Mon) The list of qualified students to waive Freshman English, will be announced on the website below on August 26th (Mon.), 2024:

Qualified students can waive Freshman English, obtain the required 6 English/Foreign Language credits, and waive the Online English Program without having to take the English Proficiency Test on August 12th (Mon.), BUT they should bring the original copy of their certificate or result slip to the DFLL Office for verification before 5:00 p.m. on September 9th (Mon.), 2024.

Qualification for waiving English will otherwise be annulled.

August 31 (Sat)

Students admitted to a fully-English taught program need to take the General Chinese Course Registration & Placement Test on August 31 to arrange you to the mandatory course “General Chinese” suitable to your Chinese level.
