Academic Information
  1. The language requirements listed are the minimum standards. Applicants are advised to look into specific departments and courses to ensure they meet all prerequisites and additional language criteria. The host institution reserves the right to deny admission if no suitable departments or courses are available.
  2. For exchange information, please refer to the website and the Fact Sheet (For reference only). Refer to here for course information, and here for the language courses.
  3. Provided that they meet the relevant academic background and course enrollment requirements, exchange students may take courses across different disciplines, and graduate students may enroll in undergraduate-level courses.
  4. OSE: Students are required to take an online placement test prior to orientation to determine their Japanese language proficiency and class placement. Class placement is final and may NOT be changed.
  5. Online syllabus: The search is case-sensitive, so it is best to copy the course titles from the online pamphlet and paste in the search field.
  6. Please note that guidance on research is not provided to SKP graduate students.
  7. SKP students can select courses only from the course lists for each track/campus distributed to them at the start of the course registration period. Students will not be able to choose from among all of the courses for regular students offered in English.
  8. Minimum academic workload per semester: It is required by Japanese law that international students attend a minimum of 10 hours of classes per week, which means at least 7 sessions of RU classes per week (1 session = 90 minutes).
  9. Estimated cost of living: 100,000 yen per month.
    • Living expenses will vary depending on each student's individual lifestyle, but a list of estimated expenses can be found on the following page at Estimated Living Expenses.
  10. Health Insurance: Students are required to join the National Health Insurance system while on the Study in Kansai Program. This insurance covers 70% of incurred medical fees. The annual premium is approximately 18,000 yen. To provide assistance with this payment, the Kyoto City International Foundation reimburses a portion of the National Health Insurance cost to international students living in Kyoto. More details regarding the National Health Insurance system and applicable rebates will be provided during orientation.
  11. It is required by Japanese law (Emigration and Immigration Management and Refugee Recognition Law) that international students attend a minimum of 10 hours of classes per week. Since one class session lasts for an hour and a half at Ritsumeikan University, you must take at least 7 sessions of classes per week* in order to satisfy this requirement. At Ritsumeikan University, credits are calculated on the basis that one semester is 15 weeks long. For Japanese language courses, each weekly class session is accorded 1 credit each per semester. Courses other than Japanese courses are generally 2 credits each per semester.

Important Reminder for the Japanese Region
  1. Exchange students who have been selected and granted institutional nomination by the university must submit their exchange admission application to the host university in accordance with the language requirement under which they were admitted (JLPT, IELTS, or TOEFL iBT).
For example, students who obtained exchange eligibility based on JLPT results must apply to the host university’s regular exchange student program (i.e., courses taught in Japanese). Students who obtained exchange eligibility based on IELTS or TOEFL iBT results must apply to the host university’s English-taught exchange student program (usually English-taught courses offered by international or global studies faculties specifically for international students).
  2. Exchange students who have been selected and nominated by the university may not request changes to the admission conditions after receiving admission approval from the host university, nor may they request to reapply under a different set of conditions if their exchange application is rejected by the host university (including, but not limited to, changing from a Japanese-taught program to an English-taught program). Any such cases will result in immediate cancellation of exchange eligibility and will be subject to penalties and fines.
  3. If the host university offers two or more exchange student programs in different languages, the exchange quotas are calculated separately. Applications for exchange admission under different language requirements are also reviewed by different committees at the host university.
