What is the difference between Exchange Student Program (E) and Visiting Student Program (V)?

✏️ How to Apply (Applicable to University-wide Exchange, Code: E)

The Exchange Student Program is established on the principle of reciprocity and mutual benefit with partner universities. Through formal agreements, partner institutions provide opportunities for students to participate in short-term, non-degree study, either outbound or inbound. To apply as an NTU exchange student, applicants must participate in the NTU Study Abroad's Exchange Students Selection for the relevant semester and obtain an official nomination from NTU Study Abroad. Nominated students may then be recommended to the partner universities listed below as official NTU representatives. Should you have any questions, you are welcome to contact the NTU Study Abroad Team.

Please note that the language proficiency requirements listed below represent the minimum threshold set by each host institution. It is the applicants' responsibility to confirm whether they meet the host institution’s course-enrolment requirements, whether relevant departments and sufficient courses are available, whether the required course-load per semester can be met, and whether they possess the necessary academic background. Failure to meet these requirements may result in rejection by the host university.

In addition, exchange quotas vary depending on the balance of outbound and inbound students between the two institutions. To sustain long-term partnerships and ensure continued exchange opportunities for NTU students, students must attend the exchange for the approved exchange period and may not apply to extend or shorten the duration. For graduate students, the total number of credits approved for transfer and recognition may not exceed 1/2 of the total credits required for graduation by the student’s home department, unless otherwise approved by the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

✏️ Explanation of Terms (Applicable to Exchange Student Program, Code: E)

  • Contractual Quota:
The number of exchange students agreed upon in the formal agreement between NTU and the partner institution for each academic year. The actual number may vary depending on the balance of inbound and outbound students.
  • Selection Quota:
The number of exchange places available for selection in the current academic year. If only 1 semester place is accepted, a quota of 0.5 may be used and should be regarded as the minimum expected number of offers.
  • Selection Capacity:
The maximum number of applicants who may be selected in the current year, regarded as the maximum expected number of offers.

Example: If Partner Institution A has a contractual quota of 5 students, a selection quota of 2 students, and a selection capacity of 4 students, this means that although the original agreement allows for 5 students per academic year (or 10 per semester), the current selection quota is limited to 2 students due to an imbalance in exchanges. Based on the host institution’s admission conditions for the year, these 2 quota units may be allocated as: 2 students for one academic year; or 1 student for one academic year plus 2 students for one semester; or 4 students for one semester. Accordingly, the total selection capacity is 4 students. Please refer to each partner university’s application information for specific quota allocations and restrictions.

Note: After passing NTU Study Abroad's Exchange Students Selection and receiving a nomination, selected students must submit an application to the host institution as instructed. Exchange student status is only confirmed after acceptance by the host institution, including campus allocation, where applicable. If a student withdraws due to changes in host institution regulations, non-compliant application materials, inability to obtain a visa or entry permit, unexpected campus/semester/duration allocation, or rejection by the host institution, the student must follow the penalty provisions stipulated in the Selection Guidelines. NTU Study Abroad reserves the right to amend, suspend, terminate, or provide the final interpretation of all programs. Unless otherwise specified, all references to IELTS in this list refer to IELTS Academic.
