Academic Information
  1. The language requirements listed are the minimum standards. Applicants are advised to look into specific departments and courses to ensure they meet all prerequisites and additional language criteria. The host institution reserves the right to deny admission if no suitable departments or courses are available.
  2. For exchange information, please refer to the website. Refer to here for course information, and here for language courses.
  3. As long as prerequisites are met, and courses are open, exchange students have full access to undergraduate courses in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. Courses from other undergraduate schools may be available on a case-by-case basis.
  4. Courses in the following departments and schools are not open to exchange students:
    • Integrated Marketing Communications (Medill)
    • Kellogg School of Management
    • Pritzker School of Law
    • Feinberg School of Medicine
    • Bienen School of Music
    • The Graduate School: Although exchange students are admitted to Northwestern as undergraduates, they may have limited access to graduate courses in special circumstances, assuming prerequisites are met. In general, you should avoid choosing courses at the 400-level (i.e., course numbers of 4XX), since these are graduate courses.
  5. Undergraduate students at Northwestern typically take 3 or 4 courses per quarter in a variety of subjects. Most courses at Northwestern are worth 1 unit of credit and meet for three hours per week over the 10-week quarter. Some classes have additional laboratory or discussion sections.
  6. International exchange students must maintain full-time enrollment, which is defined as three or more credits per quarter. It is not recommended that exchange students take five classes, what is considered at Northwestern to be an overload, given various demands and priorities on and off campus.
  7. As an exchange student, you do not pay tuition to Northwestern. However, you will be billed for on-campus room and board (if you live on campus) and mandatory NU-SHIP health insurance. You will also need to budget for textbooks, visa fees, and personal expenses. For details on costs, billing, and payments, visit the exchange student Money Matters section.
