Academic Information
- The language requirements listed are the minimum standards. Applicants are advised to look into specific departments and courses to ensure they meet all prerequisites and additional language criteria. The host institution reserves the right to deny admission if no suitable departments or courses are available.
- For exchange information, please refer to the website and the Fact Sheet. For courses and all enrollment restrictions, please refer to this link; for exchange student language courses, please refer to this link.
- Details of courses can be found in "Syllabus search (Japanese/English)"
- Before searching courses on Syllabus Search, please refer to the course list each school offers, as not every course on Syllabus Search is available to exchange students. Also, please be aware that the latest course lists and syllabus will be released right before the semester begins.
- Please refer to "Requirements and Course Lists". Only the schools/departments listed in the webpage are open to exchange students.
- If required, graduate school (major) applicants need permission from the prospective research supervisor before application. Please refer to the link for further information.
- Some GRADUATE SCHOOLS require permission from the prospective research supervisor BEFORE the application. Please refer to the Lists of Schools and the Researcher Database (or Supervisors Lists for the School of Fundamental/ Creative/ Advanced Science and Engineering) for contacts. Any courses related to graduation work (including graduation thesis) or laboratory work/experiments are not available.
- We recommend exchange students to take 7 courses per semester (14 credits). The School of International Liberal Studies (SILS) has its own curriculum. Some exchange students take as many as 20 courses (40 credits). For CJL, minimum required credits students earn per semester is 13 for half-year program and 26 for one-year program. (Only credits of CJL courses and “日本語教育科目” courses offered at GEC are counted as the credits for the completion)
- Once enrolled in Waseda University, the student is expected to complete the given exchange period. Extension or shortening of period is not permitted.
- Estimated cost of Living: Differ depending on individual life styles, but the average monthly cost is ¥80,000 for housing, and ¥80,000 for living expenses (food, transportation and daily necessities).
- In principle, students can only take courses from the School/Graduate School/Center they apply to. Therefore, students must carefully check the course list when choosing which School/Graduate School/Center to apply.
- If a student has taken a leave of absence due to military service or other reason, please make sure the student explains this on a separate sheet stating that the students will return to school before the start of the exchange program and upload it together with the other documents.
- JASSO scholarships are NOT granted to incoming students.
- For insurance information, please refer to the website.
- During the stay in Japan, all international students must register for the National Health Insurance which is called "Kokumin Kenkou Hoken" in Japanese at the city office they reside. If they are registered under this insurance, the insurance will cover 70% of their medical bills.
- However, please note that certain medical treatments are not covered (e.g., medical checkups, cosmetic surgery, childbirth, and traffic accidents). If they intend to receive treatment from medical establishments that accept National Health Insurance, they will need to take their National Health Insurance Certificate with them. If they need further information or assistance, they will directly need to contact the person in charge at the ward or city office of their residence.
Important Reminder for the Japanese Region
- Exchange students who have been selected and granted institutional nomination by the university must submit their exchange admission application to the host university in accordance with the language requirement under which they were admitted (JLPT, IELTS, or TOEFL iBT).
For example, students who obtained exchange eligibility based on JLPT results must apply to the host university’s regular exchange student program (i.e., courses taught in Japanese). Students who obtained exchange eligibility based on IELTS or TOEFL iBT results must apply to the host university’s English-taught exchange student program (usually English-taught courses offered by international or global studies faculties specifically for international students). - Exchange students who have been selected and nominated by the university may not request changes to the admission conditions after receiving admission approval from the host university, nor may they request to reapply under a different set of conditions if their exchange application is rejected by the host university (including, but not limited to, changing from a Japanese-taught program to an English-taught program). Any such cases will result in immediate cancellation of exchange eligibility and will be subject to penalties and fines.
- If the host university offers two or more exchange student programs in different languages, the exchange quotas are calculated separately. Applications for exchange admission under different language requirements are also reviewed by different committees at the host university.
