Academic Information
  1. The language requirements listed are the minimum standards. Applicants are advised to look into specific departments and courses to ensure they meet all prerequisites and additional language criteria. The host institution reserves the right to deny admission if no suitable departments or courses are available.
  2. For exchange student information, please refer to this link and this link; for course information, please see the Course Website and the Department & Course Overview.
  3. The Japanese Language Teacher Training Course is a one-year program. The certificate of completion cannot be issued to students whose exchange period is 6 months. One-semester study abroad students who wish to enroll in this course should consult with the Global Education Section (inbound@acs.u-ryukyu.ac.jp) before applying.
  4. Faculty of Medicine hardly accepts exchange students because their field of study requires highly specialized knowledge. Students may apply to the Faculty of Medicine, but we are unable to guarantee if they accept the students.
  5. Students who wish to apply for the "Major Studies Course", please prepare your research plan before applying. We need to find an academic adviser who can accept your student in his/ her lab. In case there is no suitable academic adviser, we would recommend your student choose another course.
  6. Japan-Okinawa Studies Course: No requirement for Japanese and English. * A daily basis communication in Japanese or English is desirable.

Japanese Language Teacher Training Course: JLPT N2 (equivalent or above)
Major Studies Course: JLPT N2 (equivalent or above) is required basically. However if your student can find an academic advisor who can give the guidance in a foreign language he/she wishes to use, he/she can conduct his/her research in the foreign language (English, Thai, etc.).*Please confirm the requirement before applying for the program as it may vary depending on the faculties, graduate schools, and programs.
  7. As for the 1. Japan-Okinawa Studies Course, 2. Glocal Leadership Course, 3. Japanese Language Teacher Training Course, even if the students are master/PhD, they will take undergraduate level classes.
  8. Students who apply for the "Major Studies Course" are allowed to take undergraduate Japanese courses only if the academic advisor allows, but they can not get credits.
  9. Minimum academic workload per semester: Students must obtain a total of 14 or more credits.

Important Reminder for the Japanese Region
  1. Exchange students who have been selected and granted institutional nomination by the university must submit their exchange admission application to the host university in accordance with the language requirement under which they were admitted (JLPT, IELTS, or TOEFL iBT).
For example, students who obtained exchange eligibility based on JLPT results must apply to the host university’s regular exchange student program (i.e., courses taught in Japanese). Students who obtained exchange eligibility based on IELTS or TOEFL iBT results must apply to the host university’s English-taught exchange student program (usually English-taught courses offered by international or global studies faculties specifically for international students).
  2. Exchange students who have been selected and nominated by the university may not request changes to the admission conditions after receiving admission approval from the host university, nor may they request to reapply under a different set of conditions if their exchange application is rejected by the host university (including, but not limited to, changing from a Japanese-taught program to an English-taught program). Any such cases will result in immediate cancellation of exchange eligibility and will be subject to penalties and fines.
  3. If the host university offers two or more exchange student programs in different languages, the exchange quotas are calculated separately. Applications for exchange admission under different language requirements are also reviewed by different committees at the host university.
